Melanie Washington opens the door to 225 Peabody Hall each afternoon, Monday through Thursday, welcomed by dozens of fourth- and fifth-grade boys who relish their time under the campus’ stately oaks and broad magnolias.
A licensed clinical social worker, Washington is the program director for Youth Empowerment Program, or YEP Village.

NEW YORK (AP) — A daughter of Malcolm X and prize-winning authors Gary Paulsen and M.T. Anderson are among the 10 nominees on the National Book Awards’ longlist for young people’s literature.
Ilyasah Shabazz collaborated with Kekla Magoon on “X: A Novel,” a story about the early years of her father, who was assassinated in 1965 when Shabazz was just 2 years old. Paulsen was cited for “This Side of Wild: Mutts, Mares, and Laughing Dinosaurs” and Anderson for “Symphony for the City of the Dead: Dmitri Shostakovich and the Siege of Leningrad.”

Tampa library one of few African American research libraries on East Coast
Tampa, FL (WFLA) – Tampa is city rich in history and culture. The African-American experience is part of the heritage. Tampa was once home to greats like Ray Charles. Butterfly McQueen, the actress who played Prissy in Gone With The Wind, was born in Downtown Tampa. Many musical icons visited the area.
Ella Fitzgerald was among them. She is even said of written the popular song A Tisket A Tasket in the living room of one of the area’s African-American boarding houses, The Jackson House, in Downtown Tampa.
Family sustaining wages needed for African Americans in Pittsburgh
Family sustaining wages for African Americans in the City of Pittsburgh have remained stagnant for the last few years. Reports from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette indicate that one third (1/3) of African Americans residents live in poverty, while the New Pittsburgh Courier reports that 10.4 percent of Blacks are unemployed which is 2.9 times higher than Whites.

It is often forgotten that the Clean Air Act was signed into law in 1970 after it passed Congress by a strong bipartisan vote. By enacting this landmark legislation, the federal government took a stand for public health and against air pollution, a move that was heralded on both sides of the aisle and applauded by the American people because it put the public’s interests first.
In the decades that followed, we saw substantial economic growth while enjoying a cleaner environment. The fight to protect our environment didn’t end in 1970.
